St. John's Newfoundland - Day 2 PM - City & Surrounds Tour

July 22 - afternoon tour

Despite the late drop off, we had time to have lunch before meeting for the 1:45 pickup for the city tour. We went to The Salt House Kitchen on Water Street for lunch because I wanted the moose burger, but they were out, so ended up with fish and chips and onion rings. Both were delish.

The tour was called a city tour and its surrounds. We started at Cape Spear, the most Easterly point in North America. This is the oldest colonized region in the new world, and we did a bit of a walking tour here. The guide Ellis told us about himself as well as the history & lore. We walked through a cliffside World War II gun battery and passed by some beautiful wild iris on the way up to the oldest standing lighthouse in North America.

Our next stop was Petty Harbour (pronounced Pity). I’d say what a pity people have to live here. (ha ha) It was gorgeous!

Next up was Cabot Tower and Signal Hill, one of the most recognizable skylines in Canada.

Quidi Vidi Village (pronounced like kiddy viddy) and adorable fishing village. Our other guide Larry keeps his boat there. An artis there knits and covers rocks with them. So, they were all around to see. (and buy in her shop)

Next, we drove up past The Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and The Rooms. The Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was just sold for 3 million to help pay millions to the victims of sexual abuse by Christian Brothers at the former Mount Cashel orphanage.

The Rooms opened in 2005 and houses the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador. We did not have time to visit, but if we had a 4th day to tour we would have checked it out.

The tour then took us passed the Government House and Jellybean Row. Though they can be seen throughout St. John’s, it’s hard to pick one street that is “Jellybean Row”. (Gower Street, Patrick Street, Cochrane Street, Kings Road and on and on….)

All tours that we took recommended restaurants and when asked about the best place to get “screeched in” they all said Christians. So, this afternoon before dinner we went in and made reservations to get screeched in tomorrow at 9:00. We stopped at a THC shop and got some chocolates for later.

Dinner tonight was a restaurant called Get Stuffed. Wow, fantastic food! (and a break from fish and chips). We went back to The Parlour for ice cream and walked around a bit before heading back to the hotel.
