After our last breakfast at the Marriott, we headed to the airport for our flight to Lima. (we had already seen it in the middle of the night on our way to Quito) We said goodbye to Ecuador and headed for Peru.
We were met at the airport by a driver who transported us to hotel Sol de Oro. We checked in and grabbed a quick bite to eat a few blocks away for apple pies and sodas. Then we walked back to meet our tour guide for the half day city tour.
The airport in Lima is near a fish factory (fish is turned into meal
for various uses) and it STINKS! We were driven around to different
neighborhoods and took in the sites. (not a lot of photos of the neighborhoods since they were bad shots through the car window) We stopped at a local park that reminded
us of the Gaudi park in Barcelona. There was a huge statue of a kissing couple
in the middle of the park surrounded by the Gaudi style mosaics on the walls.
It was very foggy and not much to see near the ocean. We toured the Church of
San Francisco and catacombs. The church was beautiful and the catacombs were quite
interesting. (lots of bones of dead people) No photos were allowed in the catacombs, so I bought a post card. We saw Plaza de Armas and the
presidential palace. Then back to our hotel to get ready for the dinner and
show at Junius. Fantastic performances of costumes and dances from all the
regions of Peru. The dinner was quite good as well.
