Dubai, U.A.E. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary & Souks - Mar 17

Dubai, U.A.E. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary & Souks

Tom & Cathy joined us for another off-beat thing to do in Dubai.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 67 species of birds, including hundreds of gorgeous pink flamingos. Our driver Siju Mathew picked us up and proceeded to start a city tour when I had to stop him and tell him what we wanted to visit. Most of our drivers and guides have been from Cochin, India and Siju was also from there.

We really enjoyed the bird hide. It was a long area that was shielded from the bird's that lead to a large open area with window and seats to view the birds. Many beautiful flamingoes and we did see a few other birds there as well.

After we spent some time there, I told the driver I had a strange request. I had accidently fried my hairdryer at the hotel in Dubai (forgot to switch it to 220) and the one in the cabin has no power. So, he took us to a Hypermart probably in his neighborhood that is like a mini-Walmart. I did find a nice hairdryer that works in our 220 outlet in the cabin. It also had a grocery store so we shopped around a bit before heading to the souks. On the way he stopped so we could get our photo op at the "huge picture frame".

We had time to visit Al Seef Souk and it was fun poking around. Tom & Cathy bought a few things, and we picked up some baklava. They shopped while we had lunch at Nablus Restaurant for Zaatar & Cheese Fatayer which is kind of like a thin crispy bread boat with olive oil and spices. Zaatar is the Arabic word for thyme (oregano, sage) Fatayer translates to a "villagers' pie". Which is an aromatic flat bread with wild fresh zaatar. They didn't have the desert we wanted, so we had ice cream.

Our guide showed us many new things to see in Dubai for a return visit.

It was time to get back to the ship for sail-away. We stopped out front of the ship to watch the skydivers.

We ate in the dining room and got caught up with Roy & Rondi and Gwen & Doug since we had been off the ship for days.

The evening show was Hyperion Knight (we have seen him before) and he is excellent. Concert pianist and very entertaining.

It was early to bed again as we have one more port day in Muscat, Oman before 5 sea days.
